HIGHWORTH’S COMMUNITY MAGAZINE BROUGHT TO YOU WITH THE COMPLIMENTS OF THE CHURCHES OF HIGHWORTH

Home

It’s nearing the end of the Winter Leagues for Highworth Tennis Club – yes, we’ve still been turning out in wind, fog and rain – and we’re particularly proud of two of our younger members, twins Ed and Olly Taylor.  Aged just 10 years old – they were 9 when the league started - they have been competing in the doubles Under-10 group of the Wiltshire Winter Junior League and have come top in their group!  Competing against other clubs such as Chippenham, Riverside and Marshfield they dropped only two sets in the whole competition and won an impressive 72% of all the games they played. According to Ben, their father, put Olly’s backhand with Ed’s forehand and you’ve got one heck of a tennis player!

Credit must also be given to Amy Thomas (14) and Katy Jilbert (12) who in the Girls’ Under-14s won a notable 71% of their league games, also finishing top in their group.

So what’s next for these aspiring youngsters?  Well, the summer tournaments are fast approaching and Ed, Olly, Amy and Katy will all be playing in the Wiltshire AEGON Summer League. Highworth Tennis Club has an exceptional youth tennis programme and we all look forward to what the future holds for these remarkable players.

Also coming up in the world of tennis is the Great British Tennis Weekend, a scheme initiated by the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) to encourage people from the local community to come and try tennis locally. It doesn’t matter if you’re a former player who’d like to resurrect your game, or a complete beginner: it will cater for all ages and all abilities.  At the time of going to press, Highworth’s date(s) had yet to be announced, but watch this space as next month’s edition will contain full details.
