For sometime I have thought to start a grandparents support group for people like me who for one reason or another are estranged from their grandchildren.
Recent awareness has increased with various articles in the media, bringing to light a huge national problem that exists for grandparents, who very often due to circumstances beyond their control, never get to see their grandchildren. This can bring feelings of isolation, depression and despair, as well as a deep sadness which can erode every day life, quite simply it's a living bereavement.
I decided to change a negative into a positive by starting the Oxfordshire Grandparents Support Group which provides an opportunity for grandparents who are going through this difficult time to meet over a cup of tea (or coffee) in a relaxed and friendly environment. Together we chat and share our stories and realise we are not alone. Through meeting we seek to give each other mutual support, both emotional and practical, that comes from our personal experiences of estrangement and loss.
If you would like to come along to one of our monthly meetings where you will receive a warm welcome, please contact Diana Dunk on 01367 244636 or 07979 410 998 or email email@example.com for further details.
